This is another solid outing for Madeira “Maddie” Cutler with a satisfying mystery and huge relationship development. Maddie runs a vintage clothing store which can be a bit of a problem as she gets visions of the past from some of the clothes she touches. The builders renovating her store, Vintage Magic, find a box in the attic with a scrap of a vintage petticoat inside. I confess I bought this book solely because the cover looked cool. Quoth the raven “nevermore”? I jolly well hoped it would. This novel is a paranormal mystery set in the Wild West with Gothic undertones. Ophelia Wylde, spiritual medium, is misidentified and then arrested by local attorney Sutton. He thinks she is Kate Bender, a serial murderer and spiritualist con artist. Quick-witted Ophelia may be guilty of scamming people with her spiritualism claptrap but she’s no murderer. The cover and the blurb really drew me in but I didn’t enjoy this as much as I had hoped. Private detective Susan “Ice” Berg is hired to find a girl who has gone missing in Barbados. Her father, a member of the British aristocracy doesn’t want to involve the police as it may tarnish the family name.
