I’d previously only read Novak’s contemporary romances so I wasn’t expecting a novel that was so hard hitting. Virgil Skinner might have been sentenced for a crime he didn’t commit but he wasn’t exactly squeaky clean on the inside. Finally exonerated, he agreed to turn informer to protect his sister and her kids. He won’t grass on anyone from his former gang (The Crew) out of loyalty but he is willing to go undercover and snitch on another gang (Hell’s Fury) that is operating out of Pelican Bay prison. Surviving even a few hours in this maximum security prison is made even tougher when he meets Chief Deputy Warden Peyton Adams and the two start to fall for each other. Continue reading

Forged in Steele is fairly light on the suspense but heavy on the romance. Steele, one of the KGI leaders, may have had a thing for Dr Maren Scofield for some time but he’s not the most romantic of guys. His method of propositioning Maren is woeful but she falls for it and they are soon happy victims of insta-love. Maren gets into trouble and Steele is determined to save the day. It isn’t bad by a long shot but for me this isn’t Banks at her best. Continue reading

Mann has given us a romance in the most unlikely of places, an island in the Bahamas destroyed by an earthquake. Pararescueman Hugh Franco who is tasked with finding survivors, comes across Amelia and her adopted nephew Joshua.  Amelia doesn’t know how long she has been buried in the remains of the hotel or what has happened to her family but she insists that the toddler is still alive. Hugh doubts a small child could withstand such conditions but he keeps these concerns to himself. Joshua proves to be quite a miracle baby as he has survived fairly unscathed. This should have been the end of Hugh’s involvement with Amelia and Joshua but when someone tries to kidnap the little tot at the hospital, Hugh does his best to protect them and reunite them with their family. The premise of this book was pretty interesting. Wade “Brick” Rocha, pararescueman tries to rescue Sunny Foster who he thinks is stranded on a mountain. What he doesn’t realise is that Sunny is a survival guide and can cope just fine by herself. She lives in an off-the-grid community and the last thing she wants is an outsider getting too close.  After the blizzard clears they get shot at and make a grisly discovery. Continue reading

Rock Babineaux has gone into hiding because the CIA thinks he is a rogue agent and has ordered that he be eliminated. Rock decides to go it alone rather than rely on the expertise of his crew at Black Knights Inc. as he is afraid his comrades in arms might get caught up in his mess. Take No Prisoners is what I have come to regard as typical Gerard fare – hot romance, fast pace, exotic locations and good guys who succeed against the odds. Sam Lang quit the Black Ops business when his sister was murdered and has settled down on the family ranch, helping take care of his niece. It’s hard to keep a good man down though and when Reed approaches him with a line on the big baddie, Nadar, who was responsible for devastating his family, Sam finds himself drawn back in the game. I’m afraid I really did not like this book. I can suspend a certain amount of disbelief – most people who read romances and urban fantasy can – but I have my limits. I found the plot way too implausible, the characterisation poor and the characters’ interactions tedious. I know that is a strong attitude so let me qualify it by saying that I checked out Goodreads and at the time of this review, 1401 people had reviewed it and the average rating was 3.74. Clearly the book has fans even though it didn’t work for me. Continue reading

Show No Mercy is a classic romantic suspense novel. You have an exotic location, alpha men, feisty women, bad guys galore, bombs, bullets and a conspiracy to boot. Although this is the first in a new series, the events leading up to this novel are covered in Into the Dark (Bodyguard #6). If you have the time it is worthwhile reading just to find out why our hero Gabriel Jones is so angst ridden. A few months prior to the start of this novel, he rescued journalist Jenna McMillan who was being held hostage. Sparks flew between the two although neither would acknowledge their growing feelings until Gabriel passionately kisses Jenna just as she is about to board a flight back to America. Now Jenna is back in Argentina, lured by a promise of an interview with a reclusive billionaire and back in the cross-hairs. Continue reading

Hell on Wheels is the first novel in the Black Knights Inc. series by Julie Ann Walker. An elite special ops team works out of a custom motorcycle shop, handling jobs that no one else can. Our hero, Nate “Ghost” Weller, is an ex-Marine sniper has had a crush on his best friend’s sister, Ali, for over ten years. Even after his best friend dies, Nate honours the guy’s warning to stay the hell away from her. Ali of course is also in love with Nate but can’t understand why he is so cold towards her. When she is nearly mugged and being followed, she runs to Nate for protection. Many romances are built on the premise that the hero and heroine are unable to articulate their long standing love for each other and are destined to live boring, beige lives until an event throws them together. This book works a little better than others because of the loyalty that Nate has for his best friend. He has also been scarred by experiences on the job and doesn’t want to expose Ali to those kinds of horrors. Continue reading
