This novel is a blend of steampunk and paranormal romance. I loved the cover and thought the blurb sounded intriguing. Unfortunately I very quickly realised that the romance in this novel tended towards the erotica which is not really my cup of tea. I wish the blurb made this clearer and acknowledged that the novel was more about Dr Exeter and his ward Mia rather than the absent Phaeton and his heavily pregnant beloved America. Continue reading

The first few pages of this novel drew me in raising my hopes but I found the rest of the book rather uneven. Our heroine Miss Amelia Darcy loses her eccentric inventor father during his attempt to create a rocket ship. Shortly after, she and her two brothers each receive a letter inviting them to partake in a competition to find a lost technological invention for Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. In order to save her family from their financially embarrassing situation, Amelia heads off on her kitecycle to Italy to track down an invention her father had once told her about.  Her vehicle of choice however collides with the airship of Tucker Gentry, ex Air Marshall and sky pirate cowboy. In the first line of Chapter 1, Mikani writes of being seduced while he dreamt. I was seduced by this novel while I read. I was enchanted by the characterisation, thorough world building and solid mystery wrapped up in a steampunk setting and tied with a magic bow. Police detectives Janus Mikani and Celeste Ritsuko work the night shift at the Criminal Investigation Department. When a girl from a royal house goes missing and later shows up dead, Mikani and Ritsuo have to solve the political hot potato fast or risk losing their careers. The pressure mounts as the body count rises and our dynamic duo realise they have a serial killer on their hands who is targeting women from old Ferisher (fey) Houses. Continue reading

It has been a massive journey to get to the final novel in the Parasol Protectorate series – at times a delight and other times like a slog. This novel takes place a couple of years after Heartless which should have given Carriger plenty of plot fodder. Unfortunately there isn’t much of one. It is still worthwhile wrapping up the series but it doesn’t have the same oomph that the earlier books did. Continue reading

Alexia is back to investigating unnatural supernatural events and as usual, chaos ensues. She may be eight months pregnant but when a ghost warns her someone is after Queen Victoria, Alexia puts her monarch’s life before that of her unborn child. I am still invested in the series but what once had me chortling now only elicits a smile. Continue reading
