This novel is simply delightful and I was suitably diverted. The novel opens with Lady Phillipa Marbury informing Cross, part owner of The Fallen Angel (a den of iniquity), that she requires ruination. She is due to marry the staid Lord Castleton and wants to know what to expect in the bedroom. Cross is naturally horrified that his business partner’s sister-in-law would approach him and does everything he can to dissuade her. Is this setup even remotely plausible? No. Is it highly entertaining? Yes! Continue reading

I’m glad Frost broke away from novels that just feature Cat and Bones because there are so many cool secondary characters that deserved to get a HEA. I’ve had a soft spot for Mencheres for ages and was curious what kind of woman would capture the eye of someone who has lived for so long and experienced so much. PI Kira Graceling is walking past a warehouse when she hears someone in pain. She investigates and discovers some ghouls torturing a bloke. A human female risking her life to save him is the impetus Mencheres needs to defeat his attackers. He saves Kira, holds her captive until his blood should have exited her system and then tries to send her away. Problem is he just can’t quite let go. Continue reading

I am so very glad Sparks has temporarily turned her pen towards historical romance because this was a highly enjoyable read. Caroline Munro is determined to find a safe haven for her heavily pregnant sister Virginia, niece and nephew after the British burned down their home. Caroline plays along when Jane Thomas, mistress of Loblolly Plantation mistakes Caroline for her son’s intended. Captain Matthias Thomas has no interest in getting married and thinks the woman in his bed is trying to entrap him.  Matthias should be focussing all his attention on disrupting the British supply line but Caroline is incredibly distracting. The blurb may state that “love is anything but predictable” but the relationship between Reno Wilder and Charlotte “Charli” Brooks is. We have a typical surly male who resists change and a bubbly, perky woman who is going to bring sparkle into his life. The thing is though that Terry’s characters rise above the usual shtick. Charli is the host of a TV makeover show and she breezes into Sweet, Texas determined to shake things up a bit. Rather than making over people or houses, her show makes over towns to help them improve their tourist dollars. Reno on the other hand is equally determined not to let her mess with either his town or his hardware shop. They butt heads from the moment her dog pees on him and sparks continue to fly during the renovations. Continue reading

The Vampire and the Virgin is not bad for a filler novel but its formulaic nature didn’t really set my heart on fire. Robby MacKay, vampire swordsman extraordinaire, has gone to Patmos to recuperate after a serious injury. He needs to focus on getting better so he can get back to hacking and slashing Malcontents. The last thing he expected was to fall for FBI psychologist Olivia Sotiris. Continue reading

I was thoroughly charmed by the romance between the stylish dressmaker Madame Marcelline Noitot and the Duke of Clevedon. When Marcelline hears that the Duke of Clevedon is shortly to return to London in order to propose to Lady Clara, she travels to France to contrive a meeting. She wanted to charm Clevedon so his future Duchess would give her shop much needed patronage. Once they meet however sparks fly. Continue reading

Any Duchess Will Do reminded me of Pygmalion. This works in its favour as Shaw’s play is one of my favourites. Our hero is Griffin York, the Duke of Halford and he suffers from a painful affliction – a mother who is determined to see him marry and start producing children. She drugs him and whisks him off to Spindle Cove to see if any of the social misfits there will attract his eye. She guarantees she can make a duchess out of any of the girls. Heartily sick of his mother’s scheming, Griff selects the one woman he thinks is beyond his mother’s skill, the serving girl. He offers Pauline one thousand pounds to come to London and fail at “duchess training”. Continue reading

A Lady by Midnight is the tale of Kate Taylor and Corporal Samuel Thorne. Although the premise is great, it isn’t as funny as the previous novel. Kate is an orphaned music teacher in Spindle Cove who only remembers a song and a phrase from her youth. Samuel has tried to keep his distance from her until he comes across her one day in town. He rescues her from a wayward carriage and takes her back to Spindle Cove where they find the Gramercy family waiting for her. This uber-rich titled family are convinced that Kate is a long lost relative and they want to sweep her away Cinderella style. Thorne of course isn’t having any of it and promptly announces that he is betrothed to Kate. Now they have to convince everyone in the village they are desperately in love until they can work out what angle the Gramercy’s are working. Let the games begin. Continue reading

How do you help your 200 year old immortal daughter with hemaphobia? You kidnap a psychologist that specialises in phobias, of course. Not only does Lissianna’s mother Marguerite do that, she ties Dr Greg Hewitt to Lissianna’s bed and wraps a red ribbon around his neck, because you know packaging is everything. Lissianna however thinks he is dinner and has a quick bite – hence the name of the book – before the family intervenes. Continue reading
