I adored the first two novels in this series because of their characterisation, plots and settings so had very high expectations for this one. This is the story of Beatrice “Trish” Muffet and the spider who loved her, Nicky “Little Boy” Blue. Trish first met Nicky when they were transplanted and promptly fell in love. She watched from afar as Nicky built his criminal empire, married Jules Capulet (one of the Willies) and supported him after Jules was murdered. Jules’ death turned Nicky into “the Spider”, a vigilante, as he thinks that dealing with the scum of the earth may bring him closer to nailing Vlad Dracula. Vlad however is after Trish and Nicky is determined to protect her. Continue reading

Ivy Granger has the gift of psychometry which means she is able to ‘read’ objects. Unfortunately she lacks the ability to switch off her ability and touching even the littlest of things can give her a horrific vision. The Kelpie King has been kidnapped and Ivy is hired to find his bridle. Things aren’t quite that simple though and Ivy soon finds herself embroiled in a massive fight against the each uisge. Short Review – just read it!

Long Review – in case the short review wasn’t long enough, here is a little more detail. Celia Wird and her sisters just saved their town and it is time to do it all over again. The story starts oddly enough with an exploding wereraccoon which is a pretty clear sign that things are getting weird again. Demons are in town and supes are killing each other. Continue reading

The Vampire and the Virgin is not bad for a filler novel but its formulaic nature didn’t really set my heart on fire. Robby MacKay, vampire swordsman extraordinaire, has gone to Patmos to recuperate after a serious injury. He needs to focus on getting better so he can get back to hacking and slashing Malcontents. The last thing he expected was to fall for FBI psychologist Olivia Sotiris. Continue reading

Heads Up: Morganville Vampires Kickstarter

A kickstarter has been launched to create a web TV series based on the Morganville Vampires series by Rachel Caine. They want $75,000 pledged by 11 July 2013. If they raise the cash in time – they already have $21,725 raised – they will create a series of 10 minute episodes. Caine is actually writing the scripts for series one and plans on following the plots of the first two books. If you are interested, the link is here.

Cover Reveal: Wild Things by Chloe Neil

Wild ThingsThree covers in three days is starting to look like a habit. I swear I just stumbled across this one and am not actively looking for them. Ahem.  Chloe Neill, author of the Chicagoland Vampires series has just released the new cover for Wild Things which is due to be released in February 2014. Merit is a great character and I’m curious to see what trouble she lands herself in this time. Continue reading

The Shambling Guide to New York City is a great debut novel from Mur Lafferty. Zoe has moved back to New York City trying to put a disastrous relationship behind her. She winds up working for a supernatural publisher writing a guide book to the Big Apple for monsters coterie (they find the term ‘monsters’ offensive). I’ve worked at jobs where management tries to suck you dry but for Zoe, this could literally happen as her boss is a vampire. There is something wrong in the state of New York and Zoe has to be on her toes in order to find out what is upsetting the balance between humans and coterie, and meet her publishing deadlines. It has been a massive journey to get to the final novel in the Parasol Protectorate series – at times a delight and other times like a slog. This novel takes place a couple of years after Heartless which should have given Carriger plenty of plot fodder. Unfortunately there isn’t much of one. It is still worthwhile wrapping up the series but it doesn’t have the same oomph that the earlier books did. Continue reading

Alexia is back to investigating unnatural supernatural events and as usual, chaos ensues. She may be eight months pregnant but when a ghost warns her someone is after Queen Victoria, Alexia puts her monarch’s life before that of her unborn child. I am still invested in the series but what once had me chortling now only elicits a smile. Continue reading
