Feature & Follow

Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee’s View and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it’ll allow us to show off more new blogs! This week’s question…

How do you handle a book you don’t like? Do you DNF or do you power through?

I tend to power through really bad books and it will take something really appalling for me to DNF it. The optimistic side of me hopes that it will get just a little bit better – even if it only improves on the very last page. The other part of me wants to know just how bad things are going to get. The more I blog though, the more I can see myself not being able to sustain this. I don’t want to rant about books I despised but rather those that were great or had some good aspects about them. It’ll take baby steps but I think I’ll eventually be able to DNF without feeling really guilty.

I often check reviews or get recommendations before I read something so my success rate with books is pretty high. If I liked a book then I’ll try and read everything else in the series. I steer clear of iffy ones simply because I don’t want to get sucked into reading something really dodgy.

I think I have only ever DNF maybe a dozen books in the last ten years. One in particular stands out as although I can’t remember the name of it any more (I think I must have blocked it out deliberately), I can still remember bits of the plot. The blurb made it sound like it was going to be a fairly straight forward cozy mystery. I DNFed it right after it was revealed that two generations of the same family were involved in incestuous relationships. I can’t swear to it but I think the protagonist started lusting after her biological brother and the second relationship was between her mother and her uncle (the mother’s biological brother). Not my cup of tea I’m afraid. I was overseas at the time and my luggage’s weight and size was a big issue. I couldn’t afford to carry around a book I loathed so I eventually ended up dumping the book in the bin. This was the first and only time I have treated a book with such disrespect.

The only book I have DNF’d recently was Fire Inside by Kristen Ashley. I didn’t DNF it because the book was really bad but because the more I read of the Chaos series, the less I was able to remember of the Rock Chick series. I know this sounds silly but Ashley is just about to release the very last Rock Chick novel and I wanted to preserve my Rock Chick memories until I had read Ally’s story.

  1. I hope that you can keep your record of barely DNFing. I don’t think I have the stamina or stomach to survive the full book of some of the travesties that somehow ended up on my Kindle. Rotten luck, I suppose.

    • I hope I can keep my DNFs down too but it is getting harder. It seems as if more effort is being put into the marketing of books to entice people to buy instead of into editing, which is where it is really needed.

  2. I’d say overall I only DNF’d around 10, maybe less. Definitely less really! Not sure how many as I tend to forget those DNFs! But I always do my best to finish every book I start!

    • I know what you mean – it’s that sense that the author may pull out something awesome on the very last page. It probably won’t happen but if it does…
      Have a great weekend.

  3. Usually I will give a book 50-100 pages before I DNF if I’m not enjoying it. I used to power through but I no longer have the time and it turned reading into a chore. There are too many books on my tbr pile for me to feel guilty and I’m picky about what I read, so only have 1 DNF so far!

  4. I haven’t done a DNF…I’m not sure if that is a good or bad thing..I always feel bad when I don’t finish a book even if its bad so I tend to fight it out until the end. I hope you wont have to many more DNF in the near future..they are definitely a waste of time. 🙂
